Analyze the projected energy savings over several years, and determine how long it would take to pay for the extra efficiency.  Be sure to see if there are any government rebate programs which support home owners making energy efficient home improvements.

Make sure that the window replacement company and/or the installer offers a good guarantee and be sure to sign a contract clearly stating what you have agreed for them to do and what the cost will be.  Ask to see a valid certificate of insurance from the installer before you pay any down payment and before they begin.         You will be expected to pay a certain percentage down.  Try to keep it a reasonable amount, and while the work is being done, don’t pay for more than what seems to match what they have done.

The two main types of replacement windows are double-hung and casement. Double-hung windows have both bottom and top sashes that slide up and down to open or close the window- this is the most common type. Casement windows are usually operated with a crank and open like a door.  Sideways double windows are also common. Divided lite windows have a pre-built-in frame with separate panes of glass in each segment. True divided lite windows are typically two to four times more expensive than standar windows.
