Special Diet For Crohn's Disease
One diet
gaining popularity as a
natural cure for Crohns, or at least a good remedy for Crohns, was
created by
Dr. Mehl-Madrona of the University of Arizona. He
advises a hunter-gather
diet for people looking for a natural cure for Crohns disease. "The
theory
for the specific diet is that probably we're eating foods that are new
to the
human genetic system and that some people just can't tolerate these new
foods.
So if people with Crohns symptoms ate foods that have been around
20,000 years,
they can probably tolerate those foods." It is possible the diet would
also prove helpful in some cases for those suffering from symptoms of
IBS-
Irritable Bowel Disease. The diet entails:
- Eliminating
wheat and dairy until you can be tested for intolerance or allergies to
these.
- Eliminating
acidic foods such as red meats, sugars, sweets and fried foods.
- Avoiding salads
or raw vegetables.
- Eating easily
digested proteins like fish or tofu, corn, beans, squash and cooked
vegetables.
- Increasing
intake of essential fatty acids, while reducing your intake of land
animal fat, fried fat, fried oils and hydrogenated oils. Read the
labels to look for these fats.
- Herbs can help.
Slippery elm can calm and coat the intestine. Aloe vera juice is often
quite helpful. White willow bark can reduce inflammation. Echinacea and
Goldenseal can help re-set the immune system.
Usually
people see a difference in a month and their results include less pain,
less
bloating, improved digestion, less fatigue and more comfort, Dr.
Mehl-Madrona
says It is recommended that those with symptoms of Crohn's disease
carefully
research all possible treatments and diets in order to make informed,
educated
decisions.
