Saint Johns Wort For Depression

While some people find help for symptoms of depression by taking prescription depression medications, others are looking for natural cures for depression.  Fortunately, many people are able to significantly reduce or even eliminate symptoms of depression through natural depression treatments.  Herbs for depression are growing in popularity.  It is  important to consult with a medical professional, but more and more M.D.s (and of course natural paths) support natural treatments for depression.

The natural depression supplement with the strongest evidence from research is Saint Johns Wort.  More than twenty studies have shown that this natural supplement relieves depression. Some studies  suggest that it is as effective as prescription antidepressants (including Paxil® and Prozac®), but with few side effects. This is why of all the herbs for healing depression Saint John’s Wort is the most widely known.  Prescribed by doctors in Europe for many years, it is seen as largely safe and very effective in many cases.

Recommended dosage of Saint Johns Wort

Some recommend a good starting dose of Saint Johns Wort is around 600-900mg daily and increasing to 900-1800mg per day if necessary. Others suggest less. It is recommended that you research carefully to make sure you are taking the dosage of Saint Johns Wart that is right for you.  Also, speak with a medical professional supportive of natural remedies for depression. Remember, as with most depression treatments, Saint Johns Wort usually takes at least three weeks to begin to take effect. it may not produce its full effects for a month or two.

One last warning about using Saint Johns Wort for depression. It can cause photo-sensitivit- a temporary condition in which the skin becomes more sensitive and reactive to the sun.  Some people taking Saint Johns Wort to help depression, especially those with fair skin, find that even with sun screen the photosensitivity is too strong. However, most people don't find this to be a significant problem.
