Pregancy Calendar: A calendar of each week of pregnancy. What to expect in each trimester.

The first weeks and Month of pregnancy:

During the second week, estrogen triggers your uterus (as it has each month since you started menstruating) to form a lining of tissue. This also raises levels of the hormone progesterone and prepares the uterus to receive a fertilized egg. The lining of your uterus gets thicker as the egg prepares to be released from the end of your ovary into the fallopian tube that leads to your uterus. The ovaries ripen eggs in fluid-filled sacs called follicles and it is during this brief period that your body's preparation can result in conception once sperm meets the egg.

The Third Week of pregancy:

It is during this week that you actually became pregnant (the egg meets the sperm)! You probably will not know you are pregnant for a few weeks, though some women swear they know the exact moment they conceived. Around mid-cycle (day 14 of a typical 28-day cycle), you ovulate and one of your eggs is swept into your Fallopian tube. In the next 12 to 24 hours that egg can be fertilized. After the egg is fertilized it implants itself in your uterus. Sometimes there is a slight amount of bleeding when the egg is becoming implanted, but this is perfectly normal.
Once fertilized, the egg is called a zygote, and immediately closes its outer membrane to the rest of the sperm that have made it this far. It then begins dividing into identical cells and will begin the 7 to 10 day journey down the Fallopian tube to the uterus, where it will continue to grow. Once it has implanted, the fertilized egg is called a blastocyst.

The baby’s sex is determined at the time of fertilization and is determined by the type of sperm that fertilizes the egg. Y-Chromosome bearing sperm will produce a male and X-Chromosome bearing sperm will produce a female.

Most women are not aware that they are pregnant until about four to six weeks after conception. By the end of this week, you may notice that you have missed your period. Whether you are aware of it or not, hormone levels start increasing in your body as soon as the egg (ovum) attaches to the inside of your uterus. This helps the uterus maintain the pregnancy. The walls of your uterus become spongy and thicker, creating the perfect environment for the growing fetus.

The Fifth week of pregnancy

The baby is now called an embryo. It is now possible to differentiate between the head and the tail of the baby. It is divided into three layers that will later form organs and tissues. Low on the sides of the head are two folds of tissue that will become the ears.

The central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) is forming along with muscle and bone. The baby’s skeleton will begin to take form. The heart and the circulatory system begin to appear and the heart will begin to beat this week. Also, the lungs, intestines, and beginnings of the urinary system are just beginning to form. In the meantime, the early version of the placenta, the chorionic villi, and the umbilical cord, which delivers nourishment and oxygen to the baby, are already busy doing their jobs.
