Natural Depression Supplements: Taking Ginkgo Biloba.

While some people find help for symptoms of depression by taking prescription depression medications, others are looking for natural, inexpensive cures for depression.  Fortunately, many people are able to significantly reduce or even eliminate symptoms of depression through natural depression supplements.  Of course, it is important to consult with a medical professional, but there are growing numbers of M.D.s and natural paths that are supportive of alternative treatments for depression.

There is some clinical evidence that the natural supplement Ginkgo Biloba is a natural treatment for depression, especially in the elderly who suffer reduced blood flow to the brain. One study involved a group of 40 depressed elderly people with cerebral blood flow problems who weren't helped by pharmaceutical antidepressants. The researchers gave them a dosage of 80 milligrams of gingko biloba extract three times a day. Both their depression and mental faculties significantly improved.

The herbal supplement Gingko Biloba helps improve cerebral circulation, which improves memory and seems to help depression. Ginkgo Biloba may not be as effective as St. John's Wort for depression, but it can be taken along with other herbs for fighting depression to help your overall mood. It can also increase blood flow to hands and feet, and may even help some types of erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the penis, which of itself could at least temporarily elevate your mood...

When using the herbal supplement Ginkgo Biloba for helping depression, the usual dose is 80-120 mg two times daily (breakfast and lunch), or according to some medical professions, 60-80 mg three times a day, due to the short half-life of Ginkgo Biloba. In large amounts, ginkgo Biloba may cause diarrhea, irritability and restlessness.  While Ginkgo Biloba is not likely by itself to be a cure for depression, and may not be one of the two or three best natural depression supplements, it can help treat more minor cases of depression, and may work nicely with other natural, inexpensive depression treatments, even with more serious depression.

It is recommended that you carefully research this and other possible natural cures for depression, as well as researching prescription drugs for depression, and also consult with a medical professional, in order to help ensure you are doing what is best for you.
